Dubai Metro at 16: Commuters Share Why They Rely on It Daily

Dubai: Since its launch on September 9, 2009, the Dubai Metro has become a symbol of stress-free, cost-effective commuting in the city. Over the past 16 years, it has transported more than a billion passengers, proving to be a reliable alternative to driving and traffic congestion.

For daily commuters, the Metro is more than just public transport—it saves time, reduces costs, and offers a comfortable journey. Selamawit Amare, a regular passenger, says: “The Metro makes my life easier. It’s affordable and convenient, and you sometimes meet interesting people along the way.”

Ben Varkey, who travels between Stadium and Business Bay, adds: “I get to work faster than by car during peak hours. Once, I even met a Paralympic coach on the Metro — you never know who you’ll encounter.”

Other residents also praise the Metro’s convenience. Nimin Raj prefers it for visiting busy areas like Karama, where parking and traffic are challenging. Reju S John says switching from driving has made commuting stress-free, while Benedict Bor from Kenya highlights its affordability, with fares starting as low as Dh3. Long-time resident Mita Srinivasan calls it a “saviour,” noting that it’s cheaper, faster, and more relaxing than driving.

With the upcoming Blue Line extension, even more communities will gain easy access to this vital transport network. For many in Dubai, the Metro is not just a mode of travel—it’s an integral part of city life, connecting people and making daily commutes smoother and more enjoyable.
