Graeme Smith: IPL Now Among the World’s Biggest Sports Leagues

Nearly two decades after its launch, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has evolved into one of the most powerful and influential sporting leagues in the world. Former South African captain Graeme Smith believes the IPL’s journey represents one of global cricket’s greatest success stories, transforming the sport and inspiring domestic leagues worldwide.

Smith, who now serves as commissioner of South Africa’s SA20 League, shared his thoughts during the SA20 India Day event. He emphasised that the IPL’s remarkable rise did not happen overnight—it required the right mix of vision, investment, talent, and timing. Today, the ten-team tournament stands shoulder to shoulder with major global sports leagues in terms of popularity, commercial strength, and viewership.

IPL: A Global Sporting Giant

The IPL began in 2008, introducing a new era for T20 cricket and reshaping the global cricket landscape. With massive broadcasting deals, packed stadiums, star-powered auctions, and fierce franchise loyalty, it quickly became a global spectacle.

According to Smith, the IPL is no longer just a cricket tournament—it is a cultural and economic powerhouse. “The IPL today stands as one of the major leagues across all sports,” he said. “Millions of fans tune in every year, and the competition continues to grow commercially and competitively.”

Smith’s comments highlight the league’s evolution into a premier sports brand, ranking alongside the NBA, NFL, Premier League, and Formula 1 in global reach and audience engagement.

Graeme Smith’s IPL Journey

During his playing days, Smith featured in 29 IPL games, scoring 739 runs, including four half-centuries. He represented the Pune Warriors in 2011 but is best remembered for being part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) squad during the league’s first three seasons.

Under the leadership of the late Shane Warne, Smith and the Rajasthan Royals lifted the trophy in the league’s inaugural edition in 2008. Smith often recalls those early years fondly, noting how the IPL set the stage for cricket’s global transformation.

“People forget how much had to fall into place for the IPL to grow the way it did,” he said. “The first few seasons were special—not just for the cricket, but for what the tournament represented.”

Lessons for SA20: Build Local Talent

Drawing comparisons with the IPL’s early journey, Smith highlighted the importance of nurturing strong local talent. As commissioner of SA20, he believes that building a deep talent pool is essential for any league to succeed in the long term.

“At the heart of everything is the quality of cricket,” he explained. “Every year the standard improves, and the local player base keeps expanding. That has been one of the IPL’s greatest strengths.”

He noted that South Africa’s SA20 League has shown impressive growth in its first three seasons. Viewer interest, fan engagement, and franchise development have all increased, mirroring the IPL’s early momentum. Smith hopes that SA20 keeps progressing and becomes an equally strong platform for developing young cricketers.

Evolution of Indian Talent

Reflecting on his time in the 2008 IPL season, Smith said the transformation of Indian talent has been extraordinary. The IPL has given young players early exposure to international stars, high-pressure matches, and advanced coaching systems.

“When I look at how Indian talent has evolved since that first season, it’s clear what a strong local base can achieve,” he said. “India is now producing some of the world’s best cricketers consistently, and that’s a direct result of the IPL structure.”

The league has helped numerous players—such as Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rinku Singh—rise from domestic cricket to the global stage.

A League That Continues to Influence World Cricket

Despite the temporary suspension of IPL Season 18 due to the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, the league’s influence remains unmatched. Its impact extends far beyond India, shaping how T20 cricket is played, marketed, and developed worldwide.

Smith believes the IPL’s model offers valuable lessons for every cricketing nation: invest in young talent, maintain high playing standards, and build strong franchise systems supported by fans.

As the IPL continues to grow in stature and popularity, its legacy as one of the world’s biggest sports leagues becomes even stronger. And for cricket fans, the journey of the league remains one of the most defining stories in modern sport.
