With massive broadcasting deals, packed stadiums, star-powered auctions, and fierce franchise loyalty, it quickly became a global spectacle.</p><p>According to Smith, the IPL is no longer just a cricket tournament—it is a cultural and economic powerhouse. “The IPL today stands as one of the major leagues across all sports,” he said. “Millions of fans tune in every year, and the competition continues to grow commercially and competitively.”</p><p>Smith’s comments highlight the league’s evolution into a premier sports brand, ranking alongside the NBA, NFL, Premier League, and Formula 1 in global reach and audience engagement.</p><h3><strong>Graeme Smith’s IPL Journey</strong></h3><p>During his playing days, Smith featured in 29 IPL games, scoring 739 runs, including four half-centuries. He represented the Pune Warriors in 2011 but is best remembered for being part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) squad during the league’s first three seasons.</p><p>Under the leadership of the late Shane Warne, Smith and the Rajasthan Royals lifted the trophy in the league’s inaugural edition in 2008. Smith hopes that SA20 keeps progressing and becomes an equally strong platform for developing young cricketers.</p><h3><strong>Evolution of Indian Talent</strong></h3><p>Reflecting on his time in the 2008 IPL season, Smith said the transformation of Indian talent has been extraordinary. The IPL has given young players early exposure to international stars, high-pressure matches, and advanced coaching systems.</p><p>“When I look at how Indian talent has evolved since that first season, it’s clear what a strong local base can achieve,” he said. “India is now producing some of the world’s best cricketers consistently, and that’s a direct result of the IPL structure.”</p><p>The league has helped numerous players—such as Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rinku Singh—rise from domestic cricket to the global stage.</p><h3><strong>A League That Continues to Influence World Cricket</strong></h3><p>Despite the temporary suspension of IPL Season 18 due to the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, the league’s influence remains unmatched.
