UAE Para Athlete Mohammed Othman Eyes Gold at 2028 Los Angeles Games

Dubai: The UAE’s Para athletics scene has found a new star in Mohammed Youssef Othman, a 21-year-old wheelchair racer whose determination and talent are inspiring a new generation of athletes. After securing his first-ever medal at the World Championships in New Delhi, Othman is now focused on his next big goal — winning gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

Representing the Dubai Club for People of Determination, Othman competed in the fiercely contested men’s T34 wheelchair race. Against a world-class field, he powered through to claim the bronze medal, finishing behind Thailand’s Chaiwat Rattana and Australia’s Rheed McCracken. It was a proud moment not only for Othman but also for the UAE’s growing Para athletics community.

Speaking after his achievement, Othman said: “I trained hard for the World Championships, spending five months preparing outside the Emirates. The bronze medal was a great reward for that effort, but my goal is clear — I want to win gold.” His unwavering focus on continuous improvement reflects the drive of an athlete determined to reach the very top of his sport.

A Rising Star with Big Dreams

Othman’s journey in Para sports began at a young age, and his progress has been remarkable. At just 20 years old, he represented the UAE at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, becoming one of the youngest members of the national team. Despite facing intense competition, he finished a commendable fifth in his event — a result that laid the foundation for greater things to come.

In the 2023 World Championships in Kobe, Japan, Othman narrowly missed a medal, finishing fourth. That experience, he says, was a turning point. “Finishing just outside the medals motivated me more than anything else,” he recalls. “I knew I had to work harder, and I promised myself I would be on the podium next time.”

True to his word, Othman delivered on that promise in New Delhi. His performance not only marked a personal milestone but also signaled the emergence of a new force in UAE Para athletics.

Honoured at Home

Following his medal win, Othman was honoured at a special ceremony hosted by the Dubai Club for People of Determination, recognising his perseverance and dedication. The club has been instrumental in nurturing Para athletes across the UAE, providing world-class facilities, coaching, and support systems.

Thani Juma Berregad, Chairman of the Club’s Executive Board, praised the athlete’s achievement and commitment. “Mohammed’s success reflects his hard work, discipline, and the strong partnership between the athlete and his coach. We are proud of what he has accomplished and confident that even greater success lies ahead.”

His coach, Abdullah Al Mashrawi, also commended Othman’s dedication and consistency. “Mohammed is one of the most committed athletes I have worked with,” he said. “This achievement is the result of teamwork and a shared spirit of determination. He is on the right path to achieving even greater milestones in the future.”

Carrying the UAE Flag Forward

For Othman, the medal represents more than personal glory—it’s about representing the UAE on the global stage and inspiring others within the community of People of Determination. “We are fully capable of raising the UAE flag at major international events,” he said proudly. “With the right support, training, and belief, we can achieve anything.”

His success follows in the footsteps of UAE Paralympic great Mohammed Al Hammadi, a multiple-time world champion and Paralympic medalist. Together, athletes like Othman and Al Hammadi are shaping the future of Para sports in the UAE, proving that determination and resilience can overcome any obstacle.

With his sights now set on the Los Angeles 2028 Games, Othman’s story continues to inspire. His journey—from near misses to podium finishes—is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of dreams.

As he continues his training, the UAE’s Para athletics community and sports fans across the region will be watching closely, cheering for a young man who embodies the true spirit of determination and excellence.
