Husband Held in India After Sharjah Woman Dies—Dowry, Abuse Alleged

India Files Case Against Husband of Indian Woman Found Dead in Sharjah

Sharjah/India: Indian authorities have filed a case against the husband of Athulya Shekhar, a 30-year-old Indian woman who was found dead in her Sharjah apartment near Rolla Park on July 19. The charges include physical abuse, dowry harassment, and abetment of suicide, based on a complaint lodged by her parents.

According to social worker Abdullah Kamampalam, the husband faces multiple charges under Indian law, including grievous assault, wrongful confinement, and violations of the Dowry Prohibition Act. A lookout notice has been issued, ensuring that Indian authorities will detain him upon arrival in the country.

“The Sharjah Police are expected to release the forensic report soon,” Kamampalam added, noting that he is assisting the family with legal proceedings and repatriation of Athulya’s body.

Athulya had recently celebrated her birthday with her sister and was about to start her first job in a Sharjah mall. She had lived in the UAE for two years. Her 10-year-old daughter resides in India with her grandparents.

The Indian Consulate in Dubai expressed condolences and confirmed that they are coordinating with both the grieving family and UAE authorities to provide full support.

This case follows another recent tragic incident involving an Indian mother and daughter in Sharjah, raising concerns about domestic abuse within expatriate communities.
