UAE Provides Humanitarian Support to 17,619 Afghan Evacuees at Emirates Humanitarian City
The United Arab Emirates has reaffirmed its humanitarian commitment by hosting 17,619 Afghan evacuees at Emirates Humanitarian City in Abu Dhabi since August 2021. Fleeing Afghanistan under exceptional circumstances, evacuees were given temporary shelter before resettling in 21 countries with the support of international partners.
The UAE invested AED 1.384 billion (USD 367 million) to provide dignified, fully equipped accommodations with special attention to the needs of children, women, and the elderly. At the request of allied nations, the UAE also facilitated the evacuation of 41,000 people, including Afghans and foreign nationals.
During their stay, evacuees received healthcare, shelter, food, and financial aid. Key services included:
254,000+ medical treatments, including 34,923 COVID-19 vaccinations and 303 surgeries
Education for 800 children and vocational training for 2,589 adults
Support from 17 embassy offices and international agencies such as USCIS, IOM, and CBP
The facilities also featured healthcare centers, playgrounds, and areas for the elderly and women, reflecting the UAE’s values of compassion, tolerance, and solidarity.
Beyond hosting evacuees, the UAE has provided AED 740 million in aid to Afghanistan over the past three years. This includes establishing an air bridge for food and relief supplies and opening 10 maternity and women’s health centers across seven provinces.
Through these efforts, the UAE continues to demonstrate its role as a global humanitarian leader, offering rapid crisis response and long-term support to vulnerable communities.
