What began as a day of mourning turned into a shocking moment of truth for a woman in eastern China, after she stumbled upon her husband’s 16-year affair — right at her father-in-law’s funeral. The discovery not only destroyed their marriage but also landed her husband in jail for bigamy.
A strange face at a family funeral
In June 2022, a woman identified only by her surname Shang, from Shandong province, attended the funeral of her father-in-law alongside her husband, Wang, to pay their final respects.
But as the ceremony unfolded, Shang noticed something unsettling — a woman she didn’t recognize, dressed in mourning clothes, stood near the coffin, crying and behaving as though she were part of the family.
When Shang approached her, the stranger calmly introduced herself as the “daughter-in-law.” The moment sent shockwaves through Shang, who had been married to Wang for 19 years.
Confrontation and growing suspicion
After the funeral, Shang questioned her husband about the mysterious woman, identified later as Wen, but Wang avoided her questions and brushed off the matter.
Unable to shake off her suspicion, Shang began her own inquiry — a decision that would unravel a 16-year web of deceit.
According to Henan Television, which cited reports from the South China Morning Post, Shang eventually took the issue to court, where she learned that her husband had been living a double life with Wen since 2006 — just three years after their marriage.
A secret life in another city
Investigations revealed that Wang and Wen had met while he was still married to Shang. Over the years, their relationship deepened, and they had a son together.
To cover up his long absences from home, Wang told Shang that he was working as a long-haul truck driver, which required him to travel frequently between provinces. In reality, he was living with Wen in another city and helping raise their child.
Neighbours told investigators that the pair openly referred to each other as husband and wife, even though they never officially registered their marriage. On several occasions, Wang signed hospital documents and even medical consent forms as Wen’s spouse — further proving their domestic partnership.
Legal battle and courtroom drama
When the truth came to light, Shang filed a complaint accusing her husband of bigamy, a criminal offense under Chinese law.
In court, Wang defended himself by claiming that he and Wen were merely “supporting each other” emotionally and financially, insisting that they were not legally married. However, the court rejected his argument after reviewing evidence of their long-term cohabitation and shared responsibilities.
The court ruled that Wang’s relationship with Wen constituted a common-law marriage, and since he was still legally married to Shang, he had violated China’s Marriage Law, which strictly prohibits bigamy.
The verdict: one year in prison
Wang was sentenced to one year in prison for bigamy — a punishment that underscored China’s tough stance on maintaining marital integrity and upholding the legal definition of marriage.
He appealed the decision, hoping to overturn the sentence, but the higher court dismissed his appeal, confirming that his conduct clearly met the definition of bigamy.
Public reaction and social commentary
The bizarre story sparked intense debate on Chinese social media, where users expressed both sympathy and outrage. Many praised Shang for her courage and persistence, while others criticized Wang for deceiving two families for nearly two decades.
Some online commentators pointed out that the case highlighted the importance of transparency and legal protection for spouses, especially in long marriages. Others noted that bigamy prosecutions, though rare, serve as a warning against the misuse of “common-law” arrangements to justify double lives.
A painful lesson and a message
For Shang, what began as a day to mourn her father-in-law became a life-changing revelation that ended nearly 20 years of marriage. While the emotional scars may take longer to heal than her husband’s short prison sentence, her pursuit of justice ensured that the law recognized the betrayal and deceit she endured.
As the case closes, it serves as a stark reminder that even the deepest secrets — no matter how long they’re buried — can surface when least expected.
