RTA updates Dubai taxi fares with dynamic app pricing
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has revised taxi fares for rides booked through smart apps, introducing dynamic time-based pricing. Minimum fares now start at Dh13, with booking fees ranging from Dh4 to Dh7.50 depending on demand, while street-hail taxi rates remain unchanged.
Dubai Taxi Fare Update: RTA Introduces Dynamic Pricing for App Users
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially rolled out a new dynamic fare system for taxis booked through partner ride-hailing apps such as Careem (Hala), S’hail, Bolt, Zed, and the DTC Smart App.
The updated system, launched on Wednesday, introduces time-based booking fees that fluctuate depending on demand throughout the day. The move marks a significant shift toward smart, data-driven pricing, aligning Dubai’s transport system with international best practices.
How the New Fare System Works
The new structure affects only app-based taxi bookings — meaning riders who use smartphone apps will see variable booking fees, while those who hail taxis from the street will continue paying the standard fixed rates.
Under the revised model:
Minimum fare: Increased to Dh13 (previously Dh12).
Booking fees: Range from Dh4 during off-peak hours to Dh7.50 during peak periods.
Base fare (flag-fall): Remains Dh5.00 during daytime and Dh5.50 at night.
The previous flat booking fees of Dh10–Dh12 have now been scrapped in favor of this new time-sensitive model, which adjusts pricing according to citywide traffic patterns and rider demand.
Defined Time Slots
To make pricing clearer, the RTA has outlined specific peak and off-peak periods:
Monday to Thursday:
Peak hours: 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Off-peak: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Night hours: 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM
Fridays:
Extended evening peak hours from 4:00 PM until midnight.
This system ensures greater transparency, allowing riders to plan trips knowing how fares vary by time of day.
What Dynamic Pricing Means
Dynamic pricing adjusts fares in real time based on demand and supply. When demand spikes—typically during rush hours, weekends, or special events—booking fees rise slightly to attract more drivers and ensure better service availability.
During quieter times, such as mid-day or late nights, fees drop to encourage more passengers to book rides.
This flexible approach is already used in global cities like London, Singapore, and New York and aims to make Dubai’s transport network more efficient and responsive.
Street-Hail Taxis Unaffected
For commuters who prefer to flag a taxi directly, fares remain unchanged:
Base fare (daytime): Dh5.00
Base fare (night): Dh5.50
Minimum fare: Still Dh12
Per-kilometer rate: Between Dh2.14 and Dh2.26, depending on monthly fuel adjustments.
These rates are consistent with RTA’s standard taxi tariff system and are adjusted slightly based on the monthly fuel price index.
Airport and Event-Based Fares
Trips starting at Dubai International Airport (DXB) retain a higher flag-fall of Dh25, while the per-kilometer rate stays around Dh2.14–Dh2.33.
Special tariffs also apply during major events—like those at Expo City, Global Village, or Dubai World Trade Centre—where starting fares can rise to Dh20–Dh25 due to higher demand and traffic congestion.
Other Standard Charges
Salik tolls: Each gate adds Dh4 to the total fare.
Waiting time: Billed at Dh0.50 per minute when the taxi is stationary.
Airport to Marina example: A 20-km ride with one or two Salik gates typically costs Dh60–70, depending on time and traffic conditions.
Why RTA Introduced the Change
According to the RTA, the revised system supports Dubai’s Smart Mobility Strategy, aimed at enhancing transport efficiency and reducing congestion.
By using real-time data to balance supply and demand, the new pricing model:
Encourages travel during off-peak hours, easing traffic during busy periods.
Improves driver availability in high-demand zones.
Increases fare transparency for app-based users.
This dynamic system ensures that riders understand exactly when and why fares fluctuate, replacing the old flat surcharges that often didn’t reflect actual market demand.
What It Means for Commuters
App users: Expect minor fare changes depending on booking time — higher during peak hours, cheaper during quiet times.
Street-hail users: No change in fares.
Drivers: Better distribution of rides throughout the day, reducing idle time.
In short, Dubai’s taxis are now more intelligent and adaptive, ensuring fairer pricing for both passengers and drivers.
