Blood Moon 2025 Captivates UAE Skies with Rare Total Lunar Eclipse
UAE Witnesses Spectacular “Blood Moon” Lunar Eclipse After Nearly Seven Years
Abu Dhabi, September 8, 2025 – The UAE’s desert skies came alive on Sunday night as residents witnessed a total lunar eclipse, famously known as the Blood Moon, marking the first such event in nearly seven years. The moon was bathed in a striking copper-red glow, captivating stargazers, photographers, and astronomers alike.
The celestial spectacle lasted over five hours, with detailed observations captured by Al Khatm Observatory in Abu Dhabi. Footage showcased each phase, from the moon’s gradual entry into Earth’s shadow to the breathtaking moment of totality.
Timeline of the Eclipse
7:28 pm UAE time: Penumbral phase begins, Earth’s outer shadow dims the moon.
8:27 pm: Partial eclipse stage, Earth’s shadow visibly covers the moon.
9:30 pm: Totality begins, the moon fully covered and glowing red.
10:12 pm: Eclipse peaks with a brilliant red hue.
12:55 am (Monday): Eclipse gradually concludes as the moon exits Earth’s shadow.
A Rare Celestial Event
Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, described it as one of the longest total lunar eclipses of the decade, lasting five hours and 27 minutes, including 82 minutes of totality.
He explained the phenomenon:
“The moon glows red as sunlight refracts through Earth’s atmosphere. Dust and atmospheric particles filter out shorter wavelengths, allowing only red light to pass through and reflect on the moon’s surface. Away from city lights, the coppery red is extraordinary.”
The previous total lunar eclipse visible in the UAE occurred in July 2018, with the next one expected in winter 2029.
Global Spectacle
The Blood Moon was visible to nearly 80% of the world’s population, spanning Asia, Australia, Africa, and Europe. Astronomers noted that red hues can vary depending on atmospheric conditions, citing historical examples like the dark lunar eclipse after Mount Pinatubo’s eruption in 1991.
UAE Experience
Residents flocked to beaches, deserts, and stargazing spots to witness the phenomenon. The Abu Dhabi desert, free from city light pollution, offered some of the clearest views. The International Astronomical Centre shared timelapse footage capturing the moon’s transition from silver to deep copper-red.
Social media buzzed with photos and videos, with many describing the event as “magical.” Even Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, shared a video of the Blood Moon over the UAE skyline, drawing admiration nationwide.
Looking Ahead
Astronomy enthusiasts in the UAE can look forward to the next lunar eclipse on March 3, 2026, which will offer a partial view during moonrise. Solar eclipses are also scheduled in the coming years, ensuring that the UAE remains a hotspot for celestial events.
A Celestial Reminder
Beyond its beauty, the Blood Moon served as a reminder of humanity’s deep connection with the cosmos. Eclipses have fascinated cultures for centuries, symbolizing mystery, renewal, and cosmic cycles.
Al Jarwan reflected:
“Moments like this connect us with the universe in a way few things can. They remind us that while we advance in technology, we remain part of a larger cosmic story.”
For the UAE, the event highlighted the nation’s dedication to astronomical research, public awareness, and space science exploration, making the Blood Moon 2025 an unforgettable night in the country’s celestial calendar.
