Dubai Schools Clarify Photography Rules for Parents at School Events

Dubai Schools Clarify Photography Rules at School Events

Dubai, UAE: Schools across Dubai are placing greater emphasis on photography and videography rules to protect children's privacy, dignity and safety during school events.

With smartphones and social media making it easier to capture and share images instantly, schools are reminding parents to follow photography policies during performances, sports days, graduation ceremonies and other school activities.

Dewvale School Introduces Photography Restrictions

Dewvale School in Dubai has introduced a no-photography and no-videography policy for parents and visitors on school premises unless specific authorisation is granted.

Principal Seema Umar said the policy aims to safeguard children's privacy and prevent unauthorised photographs or videos from being shared online. The school provides authorised opportunities for families to capture important moments while protecting children whose parents have not given consent.

If unauthorised images include other children, parents or visitors may be asked to delete them and refrain from sharing them. If the content has already circulated, the school may request its removal and follow its safeguarding procedures.

Schools Encourage Responsible Photography

At GEMS Al Barsha National School, principal and CEO Michelle Thomas highlighted the challenges created by smartphones and social media.

The school encourages parents to focus on their own children and avoid publishing identifiable photographs or videos of other people's children on public platforms without appropriate permission.

School officials also distinguish between a child appearing incidentally in the background of a family photograph and deliberately photographing or filming other children.

Where concerns arise, staff may speak privately with parents or visitors and remind them of the school's expectations.

Consent and Child Protection in Abu Dhabi

Schools in Abu Dhabi are also reminding families about consent requirements and child-protection responsibilities.

Shining Star International School principal Abhilasha Singh said parents receive information about the school's photography rules and confidentiality expectations. Families are also informed about relevant UAE child-protection and safeguarding requirements.

Protecting Children's Privacy

Schools emphasise that families should be able to celebrate their children's achievements while respecting the privacy of others.

Parents are encouraged to check school guidelines before taking photographs or recording videos and to obtain appropriate permission before sharing identifiable images of other children online.

The broader message is that responsible photography and consent are essential to creating a safe and respectful school environment.
