Mediclinic City Hospital Marks Milestone of 100 Kidney Transplants

Mediclinic City Hospital Marks Milestone of 100 Kidney Transplants

Mediclinic City Hospital in Dubai has achieved a major clinical milestone by completing 100 kidney transplants through its kidney transplant programme. The achievement highlights the hospital's commitment to specialised healthcare, multidisciplinary collaboration and improved patient outcomes.

Partnership with Dubai Health

The milestone reflects the partnership between Mediclinic Middle East and Dubai Health, which brings together clinical expertise, academic collaboration and a shared commitment to advancing transplant care.

The partnership was established in 2016 with Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), which is part of Dubai Health's integrated academic health system. The collaboration supports learning, research and the continued development of specialised medical services.

Collaboration Across the UAE Healthcare System

The programme operates within the UAE's wider organ donation and transplantation ecosystem, coordinated through the National Programme for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue, known as Hayat.

The national framework involves healthcare authorities and institutions, including the Ministry of Health and Prevention, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Health, and organisations supporting organ donation and transplantation services.

This cooperation helps strengthen coordination and supports the delivery of specialised transplant care across the country.

Multidisciplinary Care for Patients

Kidney transplantation requires coordinated support throughout the patient's medical journey. The programme brings together transplant surgeons, nephrologists, anaesthetists, critical care specialists, nurses, transplant coordinators, donor coordinators and other healthcare professionals.

These teams support patients through assessment, preparation, transplantation and long-term follow-up, helping provide continuous and patient-centred care.

Patient Survival and Transplant Outcomes

According to programme figures reported for the second quarter of 2026, the hospital recorded a one-year patient survival rate of 97 per cent and a one-year kidney graft survival rate of 95 per cent.

These figures highlight the programme's reported outcomes and the importance of ongoing medical care and follow-up after transplantation.

Hospital Leaders Recognise the Achievement

Hein van Eck, CEO of Mediclinic Middle East, described the 100-transplant milestone as an important achievement that represents individual patient journeys, the dedication of healthcare professionals and the generosity of organ donors and their families.

Dr Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and president of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, congratulated the hospital's clinical teams and acknowledged the contribution of donors and their families. He also reaffirmed the organisations' commitment to developing transplant care in Dubai.

A Tribute to 100 Patients

To mark the occasion, Mediclinic City Hospital unveiled a commemorative tree decorated with 100 golden leaves. Each leaf represents one patient who received a kidney transplant through the programme.

The event also brought together patients whose experiences have shaped the programme, including the recipient of the hospital's first kidney transplant in 2016.

The milestone reinforces Mediclinic City Hospital's focus on specialised medical care, clinical collaboration and improving outcomes for patients across the UAE.
