Elon Musk Calls SpaceX-Tesla Merger a Good Idea as Companies Form Committees

Elon Musk has said that merging SpaceX and Tesla could be a good idea, confirming that the two companies have established special committees to discuss a potential combination.

The announcement has drawn attention from investors, with SpaceX shares reportedly rising 8 per cent in extended trading following the news. Tesla shares also gained 1.8 per cent in extended trading.

Special Committees to Examine the Proposal

According to Reuters, the committees were formed at shareholders' request. Independent directors will consider the potential transaction, while shareholders would ultimately need to approve a deal.

Musk said he would not participate in the committees' discussions because of his interests in both companies. He also cautioned investors against assuming that a merger was certain, explaining that the committees had not agreed on transaction terms.

Potential Benefits of Combining the Companies

Musk highlighted several areas where SpaceX and Tesla could benefit from closer cooperation. These include artificial intelligence software, chip design, robotics, connectivity and space-based infrastructure.

The two companies are also involved in the Terafab chip manufacturing initiative. Musk said the project aims to produce its first test chip around May or June 2027, with volume production targeted for the third quarter of 2028.

Merger Remains Uncertain

Speculation about a possible merger has increased in recent weeks. Reuters reported, citing a person familiar with the matter, that the discussions could potentially result in SpaceX acquiring Tesla. The person also said Tesla had been working with an investment bank to advise on the discussions.

However, the companies have not finalised any transaction terms, and the proposed merger may not proceed.

Investors will be watching for further announcements as the special committees assess the proposal and determine whether a transaction would benefit shareholders.
