Dubai Police Foil WhatsApp Car Scam in 24 Hours, Recover Dh90,000 Vehicle

A Dubai resident nearly lost his Volkswagen Golf GTI in a WhatsApp scam, but swift action by Dubai Police tracked the car to Rashid Port and dismantled an international fraud network within a day.

In today’s digital age, online scams have become increasingly sophisticated, preying on trust and speed. For Dubai resident Ahmad Al Marzoqi, what started as a routine attempt to sell his car quickly spiraled into one of the most shocking experiences of his life. Fortunately, thanks to the efficiency of Dubai Police, the ordeal ended with the recovery of his car and the arrest of the fraudsters—all within 24 hours.

The Setup: A Too-Good-to-Be-True Buyer

Al Marzoqi had listed his Volkswagen Golf GTI (2021 model) for Dh90,000 on a popular online platform. Just two days later, a woman reached out claiming she was a UAE national interested in buying the car as a gift for her son. To reinforce her credibility, she even sent him a copy of her Emirates ID.

“She asked me for the car registration to check for accidents and insisted the vehicle be transported by tow truck,” Al Marzoqi recalled. “She told me she had already transferred the money and sent me a screenshot of the receipt.”

Believing the buyer was genuine, he complied. But when he visited the RTA office to process the ownership transfer, he was informed that the buyer had to be physically present with her ID. Despite the red flag, the supposed buyer continued pressing him to send the car. Trusting her assurances, Al Marzoqi handed over the possession certificate, removed the plates, and arranged a tow truck delivery to Sharjah.

The payment, however, never arrived. Calls to the buyer went unanswered, her WhatsApp status turned defensive, and her number was soon disconnected. It was then that Al Marzoqi realized he had been scammed out of Dh90,000.

Reporting the Fraud: Swift Police Response

Instead of panicking, he immediately reported the case to Dubai Police, providing them with all the details: vehicle registration papers, tow truck information, and WhatsApp chats with the scammer.

“Within 24 hours, police knew where my car was,” Al Marzoqi said. “They treated the case as if it was their own.”

Detectives tracked the stolen Golf GTI to a Sharjah neighborhood and later traced it to Rashid Port in Dubai, where the car was being prepared for shipment abroad. Quick intervention prevented the vehicle from leaving the country.

In coordination with Interpol, Dubai Police also dismantled the network behind the scam. Three men were arrested: one Arab national and two Asian accomplices.

Lessons Learned: Avoiding Online Scams

While relieved to have his car back, Al Marzoqi admits the experience left him shaken. “I told myself it’s only money and metal. The most important thing is my family’s safety,” he said.

He also shared key lessons from his ordeal:

Avoid finalizing deals over WhatsApp. Always verify buyers in person.

Do not trust screenshots of bank transfers. Fraudsters often use fake receipts.

Never release a vehicle or property until funds are confirmed in your account.

Install a GPS tracker in valuable assets. This helped him feel more secure afterward.

Dubai Police have long warned against scams where fraudsters use fake identities, doctored transfer receipts, and social engineering to pressure sellers into hasty decisions. In recent months, authorities have highlighted the rise of fraud conducted through WhatsApp, video calls, and phishing websites targeting unsuspecting residents.

Community Confidence in Security

Al Marzoqi expressed gratitude to the police for their speed and professionalism. “We are lucky to live in a country with this level of security,” he said. “Dubai Police not only recovered my car but also shut down an international scam.”

For many residents, the case serves as a reminder that while Dubai is one of the safest cities in the world, criminals continue to adapt their methods online. Vigilance, awareness, and cooperation with authorities are essential.

Final Word

The case underscores the importance of staying alert in online transactions. Fraudsters often exploit human trust, but as this incident shows, swift action and well-coordinated law enforcement can ensure justice is served.

Dubai Police’s ability to recover a stolen vehicle and apprehend an international gang within a day highlights the UAE’s robust commitment to safety and security. For residents like Al Marzoqi, the lesson is clear: trust must always be earned in person, and technology should be used with caution.
