Rohit Sharma Confirms Domestic Return as BCCI Enforces Tough Selection Policy
Indian cricket is gearing up for a significant shift as senior players are being pushed back into domestic cricket—an expectation enforced firmly by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In a decisive response to the board’s message, former India captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed his participation in the upcoming domestic season. Yet, uncertainty continues around Virat Kohli, who has not disclosed whether he will follow suit.
The BCCI recently communicated a strict policy: any player hoping to remain in contention for India’s ODI squad, particularly for the 2027 World Cup, must participate in domestic tournaments whenever they are not on international duty. This has placed the spotlight on India’s veteran batting duo, who have both retired from Tests and T20 Internationals and are now focusing only on the 50-over format.
Rohit Responds Immediately to BCCI’s Directive
Rohit Sharma has formally informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that he will be available for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scheduled to begin on December 24. The competition falls perfectly between India’s home ODI series against South Africa (December 3–9) and New Zealand (January 11 onward), making it the only one-day domestic event that fits Rohit’s schedule.
His decision signals his commitment to staying match-ready, maintaining form, and adhering to the board’s expectations. This will be a significant return for Rohit, who last played domestic one-day cricket for Mumbai several years ago. He has already begun training at the Sharad Pawar Indoor Academy to prepare for the upcoming tournaments.
Sources indicate Rohit is also considering participating in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which starts on November 26, further strengthening his readiness.
Kohli’s Silence Raises Questions
In contrast, there is still no clarity regarding Virat Kohli’s domestic participation. The 37-year-old batting icon, currently residing in London, has not communicated his plans to the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA).
Insiders say the board has conveyed its expectations equally to both players, but Kohli’s silence has created uncertainty. Fans and selectors are eager to know whether he will join the domestic circuit or risk impacting his ODI future. The lack of communication has fueled speculation, though nothing is confirmed.
BCCI Stands Firm on Its Policy
A BCCI official made the board’s stance clear in an interview with The Indian Express:
“If players want to continue playing for India, they must take part in domestic cricket. Since they’ve retired from two formats, these matches are essential to keep them match-ready.”
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also reiterated the importance of domestic cricket, emphasizing that this rule applies to all players, not just the seniors.
“Whenever players are available, they should play domestic cricket. That’s the only way to stay sharp and maintain rhythm during long breaks.”
He further clarified that while Rohit and Kohli are not under trial, selectors will evaluate their fitness, form, and overall readiness through domestic performances.
“They have achieved everything there is to achieve,” Agarkar said. “But 2027 is far away. Once they start playing regularly, we’ll assess how things progress.”
Recent Performance: A Mixed Bag
Both Rohit and Kohli featured in India’s recent ODI series against Australia. Rohit delivered an outstanding performance, scoring a half-century and a century in the second and third ODIs, earning the Player of the Series accolade. Kohli had a slower start with two early dismissals but bounced back with an unbeaten fifty in the final match.
Rohit returned to domestic red-ball cricket earlier this year, appearing in a Ranji Trophy match—his first in over ten years. This move signaled his renewed focus on domestic cricket, something the BCCI now wants all senior players to embrace.
A New Era of Accountability in Indian Cricket
The board’s latest directive marks a shift in how India manages its senior players. With the ODI World Cup 2027 in mind, selectors want consistent game time from even the most experienced names. Domestic cricket is expected to become the testing ground where fitness, form, and commitment will be closely monitored.
Rohit Sharma’s decision to comply immediately shows leadership and sets an example for others. Whether Virat Kohli follows remains to be seen.
As the domestic season approaches, all eyes will be on team lists, participation confirmations, and how India’s senior-most cricketers prepare for one of the most important phases of their ODI careers.
