Spain and Inter Miami Star Jordi Alba to Retire at End of Season

Miami: Former Spain and Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season, bringing the curtain down on a career spanning nearly two decades.

The 36-year-old, who currently plays for Inter Miami CF, revealed the decision on Instagram late Tuesday, saying it was time to close a “meaningful chapter” in his life and start a new one.

“The moment has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life,” Alba wrote.
“I’ve decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season. I feel I’ve walked this path with every ounce of passion I had, and now it’s the right time to open a new chapter and close the previous one with the best possible feeling.”

The announcement marks the end of an era for one of Europe’s finest attacking fullbacks — a player known for his explosive pace, sharp overlaps, and telepathic link-ups with Lionel Messi during Barcelona’s golden years.

A glittering club career

Alba’s career began in the youth ranks of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, but his professional breakthrough came after moving to Valencia CF, where his performances earned him a return to Camp Nou in 2012.

At Barcelona, Alba went on to win six La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey trophies, and the UEFA Champions League in 2015. His partnership with Messi on the left flank became one of the most feared combinations in world football — Alba providing countless assists to the Argentine star through his trademark cut-backs and runs behind the defense.

He made 458 appearances for the Catalan giants before leaving the club in 2023, ending an eleven-year spell filled with trophies and iconic moments.

International success with Spain

On the international stage, Alba earned 93 caps for Spain between 2011 and 2023. He was part of the legendary squad that won the UEFA Euro 2012, scoring in the final against Italy as Spain completed a historic treble of consecutive major tournament wins (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012).

He also represented his country in multiple World Cups and European Championships, serving as captain in his later years and maintaining his reputation as one of Europe’s most consistent defenders.

The Inter Miami chapter

In 2023, Alba crossed the Atlantic to join Inter Miami, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets in Major League Soccer.

The trio quickly helped raise the club’s profile both on and off the pitch, drawing global attention to MLS and leading Inter Miami to its first-ever Leagues Cup title.

While reports earlier suggested Alba intended to extend his contract through 2027, he has now chosen to retire instead — citing the desire to end his career “on his own terms” and spend more time with family.

Tributes and legacy

Following Alba’s announcement, tributes poured in from across the football world. Messi was among the first to comment on his friend’s post, writing simply: “Thank you for everything, brother. What a journey.”

Barcelona also released a statement praising Alba’s contribution:

“Jordi Alba will always be part of the Barça family. His energy, passion, and commitment left an unforgettable mark on our club’s history.”

Analysts and fans alike view Alba as a player who redefined the modern fullback role — combining defensive discipline with attacking flair in an era that demanded versatility.

A graceful exit

Alba’s retirement adds to a growing list of footballing legends from Spain’s golden generation stepping away from the game, including Sergio Ramos, Cesc Fàbregas, and Gerard Piqué.

“Football has been and always will be an essential part of my life,” Alba wrote. “Thanks, football, for everything.”

As he prepares for his final matches in the MLS season, Alba leaves behind a legacy of excellence, humility, and consistency — a champion who rose from Barcelona’s youth system to become one of the most complete fullbacks of his generation.
