Suryakumar Yadav: Gautam Gambhir Is Like an Elder Brother to Me

In cricket, some partnerships are forged not only between bat and ball but also through trust, mentorship, and shared experience. For Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, his relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir is one such bond — one that stretches back to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and now shapes India’s success on the international stage.

Speaking after India’s Asia Cup 2025 triumph in Dubai, Suryakumar reflected warmly on his bond with Gambhir, comparing it to that of a younger brother with an elder sibling.

“My relationship with Gauti Bhai is like that of a younger brother with his elder sibling,” Suryakumar told Revsportz. “We spent a lot of time together at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and through those years, I learned so much from him. Even now, I rely on his instincts and guidance.”

The KKR Connection

The roots of this bond lie in Suryakumar’s stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders between 2014 and 2017. During those years, Suryakumar played 54 matches, scoring 608 runs with a strike rate above 131. His role was often flexible — sometimes finishing innings, other times steadying the middle order. Importantly, Gambhir, who was captain of KKR, gave him the freedom and confidence to grow.

Suryakumar even served as vice-captain under Gambhir and was part of the squad that lifted the IPL trophy in 2014. Those years instilled in him not just technical lessons but also tactical insights — on how to handle pressure, manage teammates, and think like a leader.

“Even though I’ve played under Rohit [Sharma], there were certain tricks of the trade I picked up specifically from Gauti Bhai during our KKR days,” Suryakumar said. “He’s been through every situation as a player. He understands the mindset, the preparation, and how to shield players in high-pressure tournaments.”

Trust Beyond the Boundary

One of the strongest features of their relationship is the unspoken trust. On the field, Suryakumar often looks toward Gambhir for signals or advice.

“Whenever I look toward the dugout and see him, I know he has something valuable to offer,” he explained. “When I’m thinking about field placements or bowling options, I glance at him every couple of overs. Whatever he signals, I trust it completely and act on it without second-guessing.”

This level of trust between captain and coach has been vital for India’s recent success. The Asia Cup campaign, which ended with a thrilling victory over Pakistan, was a perfect example of this understanding.

Smart Moves and Bold Calls

India’s journey in the tournament wasn’t without challenges. The absence of Hardik Pandya left a void in the all-rounder role. Yet, Gambhir and Suryakumar worked with the team to find the right balance.

Interestingly, it was Hardik himself who suggested Shivam Dube as his replacement. The gamble paid off: Dube bowled a tidy three-over spell for just 23 runs and contributed a crucial 33 off 22 balls with the bat, including two fours and two sixes.

“We did miss Hardik, no doubt,” Suryakumar admitted. “But it was actually Hardik who suggested Shivam as his replacement. Shivam didn’t look under pressure and made it look effortless.”

This kind of flexibility — backed by Gambhir’s sharp tactical sense and Suryakumar’s willingness to adapt — was key to India’s balanced approach throughout the tournament.

The Road Ahead

As India looks beyond the Asia Cup to upcoming global tournaments, the captain-coach partnership between Suryakumar and Gambhir will remain crucial. For Suryakumar, Gambhir is more than a mentor — he is a guiding figure who has shaped his cricketing mindset.

Their bond, born in the IPL and strengthened on the international stage, now underpins India’s resurgence as a powerhouse in limited-overs cricket.

“That’s the level of trust we share,” Suryakumar concluded. “With Gauti Bhai around, I know I’m never alone in making decisions.”

For Indian fans, the image of Suryakumar celebrating the Asia Cup victory alongside Gambhir is more than just a moment of joy — it is a glimpse of a leadership partnership that could guide the team to even greater heights in the years ahead.
