AI Will Create the Next Bollywood Stars, Says Shekhar Kapur
Shekhar Kapur: AI Will Let Filmmakers Create Their Own Stars
Mumbai: Veteran Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur believes artificial intelligence is set to revolutionize the film industry, enabling directors to create their own stars rather than rely solely on Bollywood icons like Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan.
Speaking at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Mumbai, Kapur described AI as a game-changing tool capable of generating stories, designing characters, and building entirely new stars that audiences can connect with.
āActors will remain actors, but AI will create stars. I can design my own character with AI and even own its copyright,ā Kapur said.
The director compared AIās impact to the invention of the wheel, calling it one of the most democratic technologies of our time. He urged creators to embrace AI rather than fear it, highlighting its potential to keep filmmakers ahead of the curve.
Kapur, known for classics like Masoom, Mr. India, Bandit Queen, and international hits such as Elizabeth and The Golden Age, predicted that AI-generated characters could soon dominate films, much like AI-driven influencers are already shaping social media.
He also cautioned about the rise of deepfake technology, emphasizing the importance of protecting actorsā identities and copyrights:
āYou canāt use Tom Cruise in an AI movie because he is copyrighted. But a director can copyright an AI-created character. This will be the future of entertainment.ā
