Asia Cup 2025: Afghanistan thrash Hong Kong with Omarzai’s record fifty

Abu Dhabi: Afghanistan made a thunderous start to their Asia Cup 2025 campaign, defeating Hong Kong by 94 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on September 9. The match was highlighted by Azmatullah Omarzai’s explosive 53 off 21 balls, featuring five sixes, which set a new record for the fastest T20I fifty by an Afghan player.

Afghanistan recover after early setbacks
Electing to bat first, Afghanistan lost two wickets early, reducing them to 26 for two in the powerplay. Experienced campaigners Mohammad Nabi and Sediqullah Atal then steadied the innings with a 41-run partnership. Nabi’s composed 33 off 26 balls, including three fours and a six, prevented a collapse and allowed Atal to anchor the innings.

Omarzai takes charge
The innings turned spectacular when Azmatullah Omarzai entered the crease. His aggressive approach produced a 20-ball fifty—the fastest by an Afghan in T20 internationals. Alongside Atal’s unbeaten 73 off 52 balls, Omarzai propelled Afghanistan to a competitive 188 for six. His innings, featuring five towering sixes, energized the Afghan fans in the stadium.

Hong Kong falters under pressure
Chasing 189 proved too daunting for Hong Kong. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Gulbadin Naib shared four wickets, dismantling the top and middle order. Despite efforts from Kinchit Shah, the chase never gained momentum, and Afghanistan’s all-round dominance was evident. Omarzai even contributed with a sharp run-out to dismiss Kalhan Challu. Hong Kong finished 93 for nine, losing by 94 runs.
