In June 2022, a woman identified only by her surname Shang, from Shandong province, attended the funeral of her father-in-law alongside her husband, Wang, to pay their final respects.
But as the ceremony unfolded, Shang noticed something unsettling — a woman she didn’t recognize, dressed in mourning clothes, stood near the coffin, crying and behaving as though she were part of the family.
When Shang approached her, the stranger calmly introduced herself as the “daughter-in-law.” The moment sent shockwaves through Shang, who had been married to Wang for 19 years.
Confrontation and growing suspicion
After the funeral, Shang questioned her husband about the mysterious woman, identified later as Wen, but Wang avoided her questions and brushed off the matter.

Neighbours told investigators that the pair openly referred to each other as husband and wife, even though they never officially registered their marriage. On several occasions, Wang signed hospital documents and even medical consent forms as Wen’s spouse — further proving their domestic partnership.

When the truth came to light, Shang filed a complaint accusing her husband of bigamy, a criminal offense under Chinese law.
In court, Wang defended himself by claiming that he and Wen were merely “supporting each other” emotionally and financially, insisting that they were not legally married. However, the court rejected his argument after reviewing evidence of their long-term cohabitation and shared responsibilities.
The court ruled that Wang’s relationship with Wen constituted a common-law marriage, and since he was still legally married to Shang, he had violated China’s Marriage Law, which strictly prohibits bigamy.
