UAE weather: Red alert issued for fog; speed reduction activated in Abu Dhabi

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) in the UAE has issued a red alert for fog, warning residents and commuters about rapidly deteriorating visibility conditions, particularly in and around Abu Dhabi early Saturday morning. Meteorologists reported that horizontal visibility could fall dramatically, with some areas experiencing visibility of less than 1,000 meters at peak fog formation. Due to these hazardous conditions, authorities activated a speed reduction system on key roadways across the emirate to help minimize traffic accidents and ensure greater safety for motorists. In Abu Dhabi, a temporary speed limit of 80 km/h was enforced on major routes affected by the fog, including parts of the Al Wiqan corridor and routes toward Arjan and Al Dhahir. Drivers are strongly advised to adhere to these limits and follow electronic road signage, as they override regular speed limits during adverse weather. The Abu Dhabi Police, alongside national weather agencies, also cautioned motorists to remain vigilant, reduce speed further if conditions worsen, and keep safe distances from other vehicles. Many residential and coastal regions are expected to remain humid and misty through the early morning hours, with a chance of light rainfall over some northern and eastern areas. In addition to speed management, the authorities stressed the importance of using headlights and fog lights appropriately, staying updated through official weather alerts, and planning travel with extra time to avoid last‑minute rushes. These safety measures come amid cooler winter conditions that frequently bring early‑morning fog to internal and desert regions of the UAE.
