The Voice of Hind Rajab Receives Record Ovation at Venice Film Festival
Venice: The docu-drama The Voice of Hind Rajab made history at the Venice Film Festival, earning a 23-minute standing ovation â the longest in the festivalâs history.
The film tells the tragic story of six-year-old Hind Rajab from Gaza, whose final phone calls for help captured global attention after Israeli fire killed her relatives on January 29, 2024. Despite desperate pleas, rescuers were blocked from reaching her. Hind was later found dead alongside her family and two medics who had tried to save them.
Backed by Brad Pitt, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Alfonso CuarĂłn, Jonathan Glazer, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner, the project carries profound international significance. Produced by Mime Films, Tanit Films, RaeFilm Studios, JW Films, with support from Film4 and MBC Studios, the documentary blends cinematic artistry with a powerful human rights message.
Director Kaouther Ben Hania stated that the film aims to restore dignity to victims often reduced to statistics:
âCinema and art are vital to counter dehumanisation. Hindâs voice deserves to be heard.â
On the Venice red carpet, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Ben Hania, Motaz Malhees, and Clara Khoury carried a portrait of Hind Rajab. From Gaza, Hindâs mother, Wissam Hamada, expressed hope that the filmâs global impact might contribute to ending the war.
