Dubai Introduces New Noise-Detection Radars to Reduce Road Noise Pollution

Dubai is taking strong action against road noise pollution with the introduction of advanced noise-detection radars designed to identify vehicles and drivers disrupting the peace. As part of the emirate’s goal to ensure calm, safe, and civilised roads, Dubai Police—through the Dubai Civility Committee—announced new measures to monitor and penalise drivers who generate excessive noise.

Noise pollution is considered a growing public concern in major cities, and Dubai is determined to address it proactively. With the rollout of the new system, authorities aim to reduce disturbances caused by modified exhaust systems, excessively loud music, unnecessary horn use, and other behaviours that compromise the comfort of residents and road users.

What Do the New Noise Radars Detect?

According to Dubai authorities, the radars are specifically designed to identify multiple types of noise-related violations. These include:

Modified vehicle exhausts
Vehicles fitted with altered or illegally modified exhaust systems often produce loud, disruptive engine sounds. These radar units can detect such noise instantly.

Excessively loud music from in-car sound systems
Powerful speakers or music systems played at high volumes—even with windows closed—can disturb entire neighbourhoods. The new radars can identify these noise sources.

Unnecessary or excessive honking
Constant honking is a major contributor to urban noise pollution. The radars will track and record instances of inappropriate horn use.

General vehicle noise beyond legal limits
Any car—whether due to poor maintenance, rattling parts, or aggressive driving—that exceeds the approved noise level will be flagged by the system.

The radars use artificial intelligence to analyse the noise source accurately. This ensures that authorities can determine whether the noise came from an exhaust system, speakers, or horn before issuing penalties.

What Happens If You Violate the Noise Regulations?

Dubai Police has introduced strict penalties to discourage drivers from causing unnecessary noise. Offenders may face:

1. Fines up to Dh2,000

Exceeding noise limits or committing any noise-related violation can result in a fine as high as Dh2,000.

2. 12 Black Points

Drivers caught breaking noise regulations may receive 12 black points on their driving record—one of the most severe penalties in the system.

3. Vehicle Impoundment

In more serious cases, the violator’s vehicle may be impounded. To retrieve the car, owners must pay a Dh10,000 release fee.

These measures aim to ensure that drivers take road etiquette seriously, maintaining a peaceful and safe environment for families, commuters, and pedestrians.

AI-Powered Technology to Support Public Safety

The latest noise radars represent a major technological upgrade. By using artificial intelligence, these devices can:

Distinguish between different types of noise

Identify the exact source more accurately

Reduce errors in detection

Provide clearer evidence for enforcement

This AI-driven approach also ensures that authorities can respond more effectively and fairly to violations.

More Radars Coming Across Dubai

Authorities have confirmed that the number of noise radars will increase significantly across the emirate in the coming months. These radars will be deployed in more neighbourhoods, key intersections, residential zones, and popular driving routes to ensure consistent monitoring.

This expansion aims to:

Discourage repeat offenders

Improve quality of life in residential areas

Promote safer and quieter driving habits

Support Dubai’s sustainability and urban liveability goals

Why Dubai Is Targeting Noise Pollution

Noise pollution may not always seem as dangerous as speeding or reckless driving, but it has serious effects on public health. Studies worldwide link continuous exposure to high noise levels to stress, sleep disturbances, anxiety, reduced concentration, and overall decreased well-being.

Dubai’s initiative reflects its commitment to maintaining world-class living standards by ensuring that the city remains peaceful, family-friendly, and safe for all.

A Step Toward a More Peaceful Road Environment

With the introduction of these new radars, Dubai is sending a strong message: noisy, disruptive behaviour on the roads will not be tolerated. The AI-powered monitoring system, combined with strict penalties, marks a major step in promoting responsible driving and protecting the comfort of residents.

As more radars appear across the city, drivers are encouraged to maintain their vehicles responsibly, avoid loud modifications, and follow proper road etiquette. Dubai’s vision of calm, orderly, and modern roadways is becoming more achievable with every new measure introduced.
