How to Watch the Lyrid Meteor Shower 2026 in UAE
The Lyrid meteor shower, one of the oldest recorded celestial events, is set to light up skies across the UAE in April 2026. Active between April 16 and April 25, the shower will reach its peak during the night of April 22 and early morning of April 23.
Astronomy experts say viewers can expect around 10 to 20 meteors per hour at peak, with occasional bright fireballs streaking across the sky. The meteors originate from debris left by Comet Thatcher and appear to radiate from the Lyra constellation, near the bright star Vega.
For the best viewing experience in the UAE, stargazers should head to dark, open areas away from city lights, such as desert locations. The ideal time to watch is after midnight until dawn, when the sky is darkest and the meteor activity is highest.
This year’s conditions are especially favorable, as minimal moonlight will allow clearer visibility of meteors. No special equipment is needed—just patience, clear skies, and about 20–30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.
The Lyrids are known for their fast, bright streaks and occasional dramatic fireballs, making them one of the most exciting meteor showers of the spring season.
