China Orders All-Out Rescue After Tibet Earthquake Kills 16, Injures Dozens
China Launches Major Rescue Operation After Deadly Tibet Earthquake
China has ordered an all-out rescue operation in Tibet after a powerful earthquake killed at least 16 people, injured dozens and caused extensive damage to homes. According to reports by Chinese state media, the earthquake measured 7.0 in magnitude and struck on Thursday evening.
Hundreds of Homes Damaged
The earthquake caused more than 300 houses to collapse, according to Xinhua news agency. Emergency workers searched damaged buildings during the night, while residents moved to open areas, roadside tents and vehicles because they were afraid to return to their homes.
China's state broadcaster CCTV reported that 65 people had been injured. Footage also showed rescue personnel helping injured residents and inspecting damaged structures.
President Xi Jinping Orders Emergency Assistance
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for an intensive search-and-rescue effort and urgent medical treatment for injured people. He also directed officials to provide assistance to affected residents and send rescue equipment to the region as quickly as possible.
The earthquake occurred in a mountainous area approximately 190 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu and around 390 kilometres northeast of Lhasa, according to the US Geological Survey.
Rescue Teams and Relief Supplies Deployed
Local authorities mobilised more than 1,600 people to support relief operations, CCTV reported. Fire and rescue teams dispatched vehicles and personnel, while additional assistance was sent by the Nagqu Armed Police Detachment.
Reported relief supplies included prefabricated shelters, thousands of tents, generators and flashlights to help residents cope with the aftermath of the earthquake.
Power and telecommunications services were also disrupted in the county seat, adding to the challenges faced by emergency teams.
Previous Earthquakes in China
Earthquakes occur relatively frequently in China. Tibet experienced another deadly earthquake in January 2025, when a tremor in Tingri County killed at least 126 people, according to reports.
Authorities continue to coordinate rescue and relief efforts following the latest disaster. Casualty figures and damage assessments may change as emergency teams reach more affected areas.
