Turkey Social Media Ban for Under-15s to Take Effect on November 1

Turkey Social Media Ban for Under-15s to Take Effect on November 1

Turkey has formally announced a ban on social media use by children under the age of 15, with the new restrictions scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2026. The move is part of growing international efforts to protect children and teenagers from potential risks associated with online platforms.

According to a report published by Khaleej Times, the decision appeared in Turkey's official state journal on Saturday, following the adoption of legislation by parliament in April.

Under the law, social media providers must take the necessary technical and administrative measures, including age verification, to enforce protections for younger users. The legislation also states that services likely to create addictive effects in children must not be offered.

Turkey's decision comes as several countries consider or introduce similar restrictions. Australia has already introduced limits on children's access to social media, while Britain and France have also been pursuing measures to improve online safety for young people.

Supporters of such restrictions aim to reduce risks including excessive screen time, sleep disruption, online bullying and eating disorders. The debate over children's access to social media continues internationally as governments consider how to balance online safety, digital access and young people's rights.
