EHS Launches AI-Based ‘Synthetic Memories’ Therapy for Alzheimer’s Care
UAE Launches AI-Driven ‘Synthetic Memories’ Therapy for Alzheimer’s Patients
Dubai, UAE – Emirates Health Services (EHS) has unveiled a groundbreaking therapy program for Alzheimer’s patients, called “Synthetic Memories,” which uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) to help patients relive fading memories. This innovative approach provides emotional support and cognitive stimulation, marking a first for the region and positioning the UAE as a leader in AI-powered dementia care.
Global Context: AI in Dementia Care
The initiative comes amid global advancements in AI for neurological health. For instance, the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota recently developed State Viewer, an AI tool capable of identifying nine types of dementia with 88% accuracy. Such tools accelerate diagnosis and improve treatment outcomes, addressing the global challenge of late dementia detection.
How ‘Synthetic Memories’ Works
The therapy combines psychology and technology:
Psychologists collect memory details from patients and their families.
AI reconstructs these moments into lifelike, interactive visuals.
Patients engage with the digital memories during therapy sessions, stimulating recall and strengthening emotional connections.
According to Alia Khoury, a psychologist at Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, “Synthetic Memories combines psychology, innovation, and technology to improve dementia care, offering patients and families meaningful ways to reconnect with cherished moments.”
Pilot Sessions and Expansion Plans
The program began with 20 therapy sessions earlier this year and has expanded to 25 sessions. EHS aims to complete 100 sessions by December 2025, with ongoing monitoring of patient progress. The project is a collaborative effort involving Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, the Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation, and Spain’s Domestic Data Streamers innovation studio.
AI in UAE Healthcare
Beyond Alzheimer’s care, EHS is driving AI adoption across the healthcare sector, focusing on personalized treatment, efficiency, and innovative therapies. Mubarka Ibrahim, Acting Executive Director of the Information Sector and Chief AI Officer at EHS, highlighted AI’s role in transforming healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
The Growing Global Burden of Dementia
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, including 10 million new cases annually. Alzheimer’s disease remains the most prevalent form and a leading cause of death globally. Early detection and effective therapy are critical to reducing this burden.
Looking Ahead
The Synthetic Memories initiative offers Alzheimer’s patients renewed hope, blending technology and compassion. By year-end, with 100 completed sessions, the UAE could set a global benchmark for AI-driven dementia therapy, demonstrating how artificial intelligence can restore memories, dignity, and emotional connections for patients and their families.
Conclusion
EHS’s Synthetic Memories program underscores the UAE’s position as a global hub for healthcare innovation, showing that AI can go beyond diagnosis to provide meaningful care. As dementia rates rise worldwide, initiatives like this may become standard practice, helping millions preserve cherished memories while improving quality of life.
