UAE Ruler Sheikh Mohammed Tests Etihad Rail Passenger Line

Sheikh Mohammed Takes Historic Ride on Etihad Rail Passenger Train

Dubai: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, recently traveled on the Etihad Rail passenger train from Dubai to Fujairah, marking a milestone for the UAE’s national railway project. Photos of the ride were shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, emphasizing the project’s significance for the country’s infrastructure and connectivity.

A Nationwide Rail Network

Once operational in 2026, the Etihad Rail passenger network will connect 11 cities across the UAE — from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah in the east — with trains reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h. The network is projected to serve 36 million passengers annually by 2030, significantly reducing travel times between emirates.

“Extremely proud of our national projects, of the Etihad Rail team led by Theyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed, and of a nation that builds its future every single day,” Sheikh Mohammed wrote on X.

Project Background and Progress

The passenger rail project, part of the ‘Projects of the 50’ initiative launched in 2021, followed the commencement of freight operations in 2023. During his visit, Sheikh Mohammed was briefed on construction progress and future plans by the Etihad Rail team.
