From Olympic Torchbearer to Fitness Pioneer: Ivana Bruic’s Journey in Dubai

Ivana Bruic: Redefining Sportsmanship and Women’s Fitness in Dubai

For many athletes, sportsmanship means fair play, post-game handshakes, and respect for rivals. For Ivana Bruic, it has always meant something deeper—showing up, bouncing back, and creating space for yourself and others even when the odds are long. Today she is the founder of Storm Cycling, one of Dubai’s most popular rhythm-cycling studios and a safe, empowering hub for women. Her path to entrepreneurship, however, began decades earlier and was shaped by determination, setbacks, and a life-changing moment as an Olympic torchbearer.

Growing Up Against the Odds

Raised by traditional Croatian parents after moving to Australia, Bruic was urged to prioritise academics over athletics. But she refused to be sidelined, excelling in 400m and 300m track events. Everything shifted when she was chosen to carry the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch—an honour that won her parents’ support and validated her passion for sport, even as she later stepped away to work in fashion and advertising.

From Spark to Storm

Years later in Dubai, Bruic discovered rhythm-based cycling classes set to music and instantly saw their potential. By 2020 she launched Storm Cycling, determined to bring high-energy, women-focused workouts closer to underserved neighbourhoods. Then the pandemic struck. Instead of closing, Bruic pivoted to virtual classes, helping the studio survive and ultimately thrive as a vibrant community of encouragement and connection.

Wellness Beyond the Physical

For Bruic, fitness is inseparable from mental and emotional well-being. She hires coaches for both skill and empathy, ensuring every class offers more than a physical challenge. ā€œSupporting mental health is as important as physical health,ā€ she says. Her sessions invite women to leave stress and obligations at the door, immersing themselves in music and movement without pressure to compete.

Building a Brand, Brick by Brick

What started as a single studio in Mirdif has grown into a recognised brand with a second branch on Palm Jumeirah. Bruic is candid about the journey: ā€œEntrepreneurship isn’t glamorous. Things go wrong, you fail, and you learn. But every failure teaches you to stand stronger next time.ā€ Her advice: work in the field first, listen to feedback—even when it stings—and surround yourself with mentors who challenge and support you.

Lessons That Last

Bruic embodies the idea that persistence matters more than perfection. Whether moving from a 2.5-kg dumbbell to a 5-kg one or opening a second studio after a global pandemic, she proves progress takes many forms. As she often reminds her clients, ā€œWhen you rise, plant your feet so firmly that the next fall won’t shake you as hard.ā€

Through Storm Cycling, Ivana Bruic has become more than an entrepreneur—she’s a trailblazer for women’s fitness in Dubai and a living example that true sportsmanship reaches far beyond the track.
