Hafeet Rail: Connecting the UAE and Oman by Train
Hafeet Rail: UAE and Oman to Be Linked by First Cross-Border Railway
The UAE and Oman are set to witness a historic milestone in regional transport with the launch of Hafeet Rail, the first-ever railway connecting the two countries. Named after Jebel Hafeet, the iconic mountain on the UAE-Oman border, this $2.5 billion (960 million OMR) project is a joint venture between Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company.
Strategic Vision
Hafeet Rail aims to strengthen economic ties by creating a seamless transport and logistics network. The railway will link the UAEās Etihad Rail network at Al Ain with Sohar Port in Oman, forming a unified corridor for passenger and freight movement.
Faster, More Convenient Travel
For travelers, the railway promises speed, comfort, and scenic journeys:
Travel time between Abu Dhabi and Sohar will drop from 3 hours 25 minutes to just 1 hour 40 minutes.
Trains will run at speeds of up to 200 km/h, offering a modern alternative to driving.
Over 12 passenger stations will connect 5 major ports and more than 15 integrated freight facilities.
Economic and Tourism Impact
The railway is expected to:
Facilitate cross-border trade and logistics with reduced delays at checkpoints.
Boost tourism by providing picturesque routes through deserts, valleys, and mountains, including the Jebel Hafeet region.
Reduce reliance on road travel, particularly during busy periods or adverse weather.
Current Status
Construction is underway, with the Hafeet Rail Company finalizing operational timelines. Once completed, this project will transform travel and trade between the UAE and Oman, offering a faster, safer, and more efficient cross-border alternative.
