'Missing' oxygen masks, landed by plumber? 5 flydubai FZ1073 questions answered

Several questions have emerged after flydubai flight FZ1073 made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on September 30. UAE investigators have released preliminary findings while the aviation and criminal investigations remain ongoing.

The incident raised questions about why oxygen masks did not deploy despite the aircraft losing around 16,000 feet, how the aircraft continued flying with visible rudder damage, and whether a passenger helped land the aircraft.

Aviation analyst Saj Ahmad explained that oxygen masks are triggered by cabin pressure rather than simply by a rapid loss of altitude. He also clarified that the plumber who briefly handled the controls did not land the aircraft; the flight's pilots ultimately secured and landed it safely.

The aircraft was able to remain controllable despite damage to its rudder because pilots still had other flight-control systems, including elevators, ailerons and engine controls. The expert also explained that losing altitude does not automatically mean an aircraft will break apart, as factors such as descent rate, airspeed and control authority are important.

Investigators are continuing to examine the incident, and flight data recorders are expected to provide further details about what happened during the flight.
