Dubai Police Warn Against Harmful Online Comments and Fake Reviews

Dubai Police Warn Against Harmful Online Comments and Fake Reviews

Dubai, UAE: Dubai Police have cautioned social media users against using online platforms to damage the reputation or interests of individuals and businesses. Authorities stressed that online criticism must remain within legal boundaries.

Major Yasser Juma Mohammed, head of the Social Media Crimes Section at Dubai Police, explained on the Dubai Police Podcast that expressing opinions online does not give users the right to insult, defame or deliberately harm others.

Suspects Arrested Over Fake Google Maps Reviews

Dubai Police cited a case involving a company that complained about a series of negative reviews posted on Google Maps.

According to Major Yasser, investigations indicated that several commercial shops had allegedly coordinated to publish false comments about the company, despite those involved not having visited its premises.

The reviews reportedly affected the company's business and caused financial losses. Police investigated the accounts, identified the individuals involved, and arrested suspects who were subsequently referred to the Public Prosecution.

When Can Online Comments Lead to Legal Action?

Authorities explained that online activity may result in legal accountability when it involves conduct such as insults, defamation, threats, spreading rumours, electronic fraud or hacking social media accounts.

Dubai Police urged residents to respect other people's rights and think carefully before publishing comments or content that could cause harm.

Officials also warned that using fake accounts does not necessarily protect users from identification, as investigators can examine digital information to identify those responsible.

Warning Against Sharing Unverified Rumours

Dubai Police also cautioned residents against spreading rumours or sharing outdated information without checking whether it remains accurate.

The warning applies not only to people who originally publish misleading information but also to those who reshare it.

During emergencies and crises, residents are advised to follow official instructions and avoid circulating unverified photographs or videos that could create confusion or affect community security.

Advice for Social Media Users

Authorities encouraged residents to verify information before sharing it, rely on official announcements and trusted sources, and ensure that reviews reflect genuine experiences.

The case serves as a reminder that online comments and reviews can have consequences beyond social media, particularly when false information is deliberately used to harm another person or business.
