Class 6 Girl Dies After â100 Sit-Upsâ Punishment in Maharashtra
India: Class 6 Student Dies After Being Forced to Do 100 Sit-Ups for Arriving Late
A shocking incident from Maharashtra has raised serious concerns about school discipline methods and student safety. A Class 6 girl from Sativali, Vasai, died nearly a week after she was allegedly forced to perform 100 sit-ups as punishment for coming late to school. The tragic incident has sparked protests, widespread anger, and an official investigation into the role of the school and its teachers.
The Punishment That Turned Fatal
According to media reports, the incident took place on November 8. The girl, along with four other students, had arrived late to school. As punishment, a teacher allegedly ordered all of them to complete 100 sit-ups, and the girl was reportedly made to perform them with her school bag still strapped to her back.
Her mother later revealed to the media that the punishment caused her daughter intense physical pain.
She said, âAfter the punishment, she experienced severe pain in her neck and back. She couldnât get up.â
As her condition worsened, the family took her to a hospital in Mumbai, where she passed away on Friday nightâalmost a week after the alleged punishment.
Mother Accuses School of âInhuman Punishmentâ
The girlâs mother directly blamed the school and the teacher responsible for the disciplinary action. She described the punishment as harsh, unnecessary, and dangerous.
Speaking to reporters, she said she confronted the teacher, who tried to justify the punishment by saying that parents often accuse teachers of not doing their job properly despite charging school fees. The mother responded firmly that discipline should never involve physically harmful actions like forcing students to do sit-ups with heavy bags on their backs.
Calling the action âinhumanâ, she insisted that this punishment led to her daughterâs death.
Conflicting Statements From Teachers
While the family and local political groups have accused the school of negligence, some teachers have offered differing accounts.
One teacher mentioned that it is unclear exactly how many sit-ups the child performed, raising the possibility that other factors may have contributed to her death. Another teacher suggested that the girl may have had pre-existing medical problems, but insisted that further investigation is required to determine the exact cause.
Investigation Launched
Block Education Officer Pandurang Galange confirmed that a formal inquiry is underway. Officials will review statements from the teachers, parents, medical authorities, and students. The investigation will also look into whether the school followed proper guidelines for discipline.
Authorities are expected to examine:
Whether the teacher forced the students to do 100 sit-ups
Whether the girl had any medical conditions
Whether the punishment directly contributed to her death
Whether the school has a history of harsh disciplinary methods
The final medical report will play a key role in determining accountability.
Political Groups and Public Outrage
The incident has triggered strong reactions from political parties and local residents. Members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) staged protests outside the school, demanding strict action against those responsible.
MNS leader Sachin More stated that the girl had some health issues but was still forced to undergo the punishment, calling it a âcruel and careless act.â Protesters also criticised the school for allowing such methods and failing to protect students.
A Larger Question: Are Harsh Punishments Still Common?
This tragedy has reopened national conversations about physical punishment in Indian schools. Despite strict laws under the Right to Education Act, many schoolsâespecially in semi-urban and rural areasâcontinue to use physical discipline as a method to âcorrectâ students.
Child rights activists point out that punishments like sit-ups, hitting, or making children stand outside classrooms are not only outdated but also harmful to their mental and physical health.
Demand for Accountability
Parents, activists, and political groups are demanding:
Suspension of the teacher involved
A thorough inquiry
Clear regulations to prevent physical punishment
Awareness programs for teachers on non-violent discipline
The girlâs death has shaken the community, with many calling for reforms to ensure that such incidents never happen again.
