Abu Dhabi introduces smart system to stop misuse of PoD parking
Abu Dhabi launches smart system to catch misuse of PoD parking
Abu Dhabi has taken another major step towards creating an inclusive and smart urban environment with the launch of a new electronic system designed to prevent the misuse of People of Determination (PoD) parking spaces. The People of Determination Parking Permit Inquiry System has been jointly developed by the Zayed Authority for People of Determination (ZAPOD) and Q Mobility, a leading provider of sustainable and integrated smart mobility solutions in the UAE capital.
This advanced digital initiative ensures that designated parking areas for people of determination are used exclusively by those who are officially authorised. The system represents Abu Dhabi’s growing commitment to building a city that empowers all residents through technology, accessibility, and inclusion.
How the system works
The new system operates through a simple yet powerful verification process. Inspectors or authorised personnel can input a vehicle’s plate number into the platform, which immediately checks and displays whether the car has a valid PoD parking permit. If an unauthorised vehicle is detected occupying a PoD-designated space, necessary actions can be taken in real time.
This digital tool integrates with the Mawaqif and Darb platforms, which manage parking and traffic operations in Abu Dhabi. By connecting these systems, authorities can monitor parking usage efficiently, reduce manual inspections, and ensure that the rights of people of determination are safeguarded. The solution will be rolled out across public and private parking areas — from shopping malls and hospitals to residential and commercial complexes — to provide consistent accessibility wherever needed.
Technology and inclusion hand in hand
During GITEX Global 2025, the Zayed Authority for People of Determination and Q Mobility signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further enhance the Mawaqif and Darb services for people of determination. This partnership aims to introduce next-generation features powered by artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and assistive technology.
According to Abdullah Abdulali Al Humaidan, Director-General of the Zayed Authority for People of Determination, the initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s leadership vision to build an inclusive, smart, and accessible society.
“This initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to smart services that address the needs of people of determination, providing them with a supportive and sustainable environment that ensures quality of life and independence,” Al Humaidan said. “The organisation continues to work with its partners to strengthen digital inclusion and make technology a tool for empowerment, not a limitation.”
The system represents a major advancement in ensuring equality and independence for individuals with disabilities. It allows them to move around the city more freely, knowing that their parking spaces are protected and properly managed.
Partnership with Q Mobility
Mohamed Hussein Karmastaji, CEO of Q Mobility, emphasised that the company’s mission goes beyond developing mobility tools — it’s about creating an ecosystem of accessibility.
“Through this partnership, we aim to empower people of determination to fully benefit from our services with ease and safety, reflecting our commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable city,” he said.
Q Mobility has been a key player in advancing Abu Dhabi’s digital mobility landscape. Their technologies are already integrated into Mawaqif and Darb systems, enabling real-time data analysis, automated monitoring, and user-friendly interfaces for both residents and government authorities.
A step toward a fully inclusive Abu Dhabi
The UAE’s capital has consistently led regional efforts to make cities smarter and more accessible. The new PoD Parking Permit Inquiry System adds another milestone to that journey, combining artificial intelligence, data-driven decision-making, and assistive technology to improve daily life for people of determination.
By tackling the issue of unauthorised parking, Abu Dhabi is ensuring that PoD individuals — including those with mobility challenges — enjoy their right to convenient and safe access. It’s also part of a broader push toward digital transformation, aligning with the UAE Centennial 2071 Vision and Abu Dhabi’s strategy for smart, sustainable, and inclusive urban development.
This initiative sets a benchmark for other cities in the region to follow, blending empathy with innovation. It highlights how technology, when designed with inclusion in mind, can make public spaces more equitable and communities more compassionate.
As Abu Dhabi continues to roll out more AI-powered features across its transport and infrastructure systems, the focus remains clear: to create a city where everyone — regardless of ability — can live, move, and thrive independently.
