Amitabh Bachchan’s emotional farewell to Dharmendra: A bond beyond Sholay

The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of a legend as veteran actor Dharmendra, one of the most celebrated stars of Hindi cinema, passed away on November 24 at the age of 89 after battling prolonged illness. The news has left fans and film personalities grieving deeply, with tributes flooding social media. But among the countless messages shared, it is the emotional farewell from Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra’s close friend and co-star in one of India’s most iconic films Sholay (1975), that has touched hearts across the world.

Dharmendra, fondly remembered as Bollywood’s original “He-Man,” died at his residence in Juhu, Mumbai, following health complications that worsened over the past month. He had been undergoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital and returned home to recover before his condition declined. His last rites were performed on Monday at Pawan Hans Crematorium, where several prominent personalities from the Indian film fraternity arrived to pay their respects, including Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Agastya Nanda.

A deep bond that time never changed

In an industry where friendships often dissolve with changing careers and competitiveness, the relationship between Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra remained one of admiration, humour, and brotherly affection that lasted nearly five decades. Their chemistry as Jai and Veeru in Sholay became one of the most iconic pairings in Indian cinema — a friendship on screen that reflected their real-life bond.

Remembering his dear friend, Bachchan shared an emotional tribute that resonated with fans:

“Another valiant giant has left us… left the arena… leaving behind a silence with an unbearable sound… Dharam ji.”

He described Dharmendra not only as a charismatic superstar but as a person of exceptional kindness and humility, a gentleman who navigated fame with grace. In his words, Dharmendra was “the epitome of greatness,” defined not only by his commanding on-screen persona but by the largeness of his heart.

Bachchan reflected on the nature of the film industry — a space of constant change and shifting loyalties — noting that Dharmendra remained steadfast and untouched by turbulence:

“Unsoiled throughout his glorious career, in a fraternity that witnessed changes every decade… the frantic fraternity underwent changes… not him.”

His tribute ended with a memory that fans will forever associate with the beloved star:

“His smile, his charm and his warmth, extending to all that came in his vicinity… a rarity in the profession. The air around us swings vacant… a vacuum that shall ever remain… prayers.”

A career that defined eras

Dharmendra leaves behind a film legacy spanning more than 60 years, with unforgettable performances across genres — from intense action dramas such as Phool Aur Patthar, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Dharam Veer, and Aankhen, to comedies and romances like Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, and Dream Girl.

He was admired as much for his acting versatility as for his grounded personality and devotion to his craft. His combination of rugged masculinity and soft-spoken charm made him a cherished figure both on and off screen.

His upcoming film, Ikkis, starring Agastya Nanda and Jaideep Ahlawat, is set to release this Christmas, giving fans one final opportunity to watch their hero shine on screen.

More than co-stars — a brotherhood

Sholay remains one of India’s most loved classics, and the camaraderie between Dharmendra’s Veeru and Bachchan’s Jai has become immortal in cinematic history. The cowboy-friendship narrative symbolised loyalty, sacrifice and humour — values that defined their real-life relationship.

For fans, Bachchan’s tribute marks the end of an era. It brings back memories of laughter, legendary dialogues, and decades of companionship that shaped the golden age of Indian cinema.

A nation remembers

As tributes pour in from actors, directors, fans, and political leaders, Dharmendra’s passing has been described as an unparalleled loss. Social media timelines have filled with emotional movie scenes, old interviews, and behind-the-scenes stories celebrating the star whose charm captivated generations.

What remains is a legacy that refuses to fade — a cinematic titan whose warmth and humanity touched millions.

Just as Jai said to Veeru in Sholay:
“Yeh dosti hum nahi todenge.”
(A friendship we will never break.)

For Amitabh Bachchan and for millions of fans around the world, those words now carry a depth no script could have written.
