Abu Dhabi launches pilot project using satellites to identify illegal waste dumping sites

Abu Dhabi has unveiled a groundbreaking pilot project that harnesses satellite imagery and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to detect illegal waste dumping sites across the emirate. Led by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), this initiative marks the first deployment in the UAE where AI and remote sensing are combined to monitor waste violations, reflecting a major shift from traditional field inspections to intelligent, data‑driven environmental oversight. The pilot project was first implemented in the Al Bukariyah area of the Al Ain Region and delivered promising results, achieving more than 90 % accuracy in identifying illegal dumping sites. During the trial, the AI system detected 150 waste sites, significantly surpassing the 43 locations found through conventional on‑the‑ground monitoring methods in the same period. In addition to identifying sites, the system can classify waste types, track changes in site size and duration, and provide deeper insights into patterns of illegal dumping.  Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary‑General of EAD, emphasized that the project showcases Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainable development and smart environmental governance, aligning with the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071 Plan. By leveraging smart technologies such as satellite analysis and AI, the agency aims to enhance the efficiency of waste management systems, boost proactive detection, and ensure rapid cleanup of affected areas. Following the identification of illegal dumping locations, EAD coordinates with relevant authorities to remove waste and rehabilitate the environment, and continued monitoring helps prevent recurrence. Given the pilot’s success, plans are underway to expand the program across the entire emirate, including the setup of a centralised AI‑powered environmental monitoring platform to further improve oversight and sustainability outcomes.
