Yamaha Unveils AI-Powered Motorcycle at Japan Mobility Show
Yamaha Motor has showcased a bold vision for the future of mobility with the unveiling of its next-generation AI-powered motorcycle at the Japan Mobility Show. The company introduced the latest evolution of its MOTOROiD project, a concept designed to elevate the relationship between rider and machine to an entirely new level. Alongside the futuristic model, Yamaha also presented hydrogen-powered bikes, electric vehicles, and next-gen mobility solutions reflecting its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and user satisfaction.
Yamaha Motor CEO Motofumi Shitara declared that the company’s philosophy remains rooted in creating “deep satisfaction and excitement.” The brand aims to spark emotional connection through technology—something their new AI motorcycle strongly embodies.
A New Generation of AI: MOTOROiD λ (Lambda)
Yamaha’s MOTOROiD project has been in development for nearly a decade. It began capturing public attention in 2017 when the first MOTOROiD prototype famously stood up by itself and moved toward its rider, showcasing advanced balance control. In 2023, Yamaha introduced MOTOROiD2, refining its design and improving its sense of "vitality."
Now, in 2025, Yamaha has taken a significant leap forward with the unveiling of the third-generation MOTOROiD λ (Lambda). This model features advanced artificial intelligence that learns from the rider’s actions, enabling the bike to predict behaviors and respond intuitively. Yamaha engineers describe the relationship between rider and machine as similar to the connection between a horse and its rider—a seamless, instinctive partnership built on trust and communication.
The AI system analyzes complex movements, adjusts handling characteristics, and adapts to different riding styles. This allows MOTOROiD λ to support riders during acceleration, braking, turning, and balancing, enhancing safety while maintaining exhilarating performance.
Hydrogen-Powered Innovation
Beyond AI motorcycles, Yamaha is also exploring clean-energy mobility. At the show, the company introduced a hydrogen-powered motorbike developed in collaboration with Toyota.
Key features include:
A driving range of up to 100 kilometers on a full hydrogen charge
A maximum speed of 90 km/h
Compliance with strict exhaust and environmental regulations
Zero carbon emissions
The bike has already passed regulatory tests and is now nearing the production stage. Yamaha believes hydrogen engines can play a crucial role in sustainable transportation, especially for riders who prefer the feeling and sound of combustion engines but want a cleaner alternative.
Electric Mobility: Yamaha’s EV “Three Brothers”
Yamaha also revealed a trio of electric mobility options—nicknamed the EV Three Brothers—which include:
A 100% electric motorcycle
A hybrid model
A plug-in hybrid vehicle
This lineup ensures Yamaha remains competitive across multiple segments as the industry shifts toward greener, electrified mobility. The EV trio is designed for future market needs, balancing efficiency, performance, and rider excitement.
Three-Wheeled Motorcycle with Independent Steering System
Another highlight was Yamaha’s innovative three-wheeled motorcycle. Unlike typical trikes, this concept features independent steering for the two front wheels and the single rear wheel. This allows riders to maneuver with greater stability, sharper cornering, and improved control. Yamaha says the experience blends comfort and thrill, making it suitable for both city commuting and recreational riding.
Mobility for Daily Life: E-Bikes and Smart Wheelchairs
Yamaha’s innovations also extend beyond motorcycles. The company showcased new electric power-assisted bicycles and next-generation wheelchairs, designed to enhance daily living.
The lineup includes:
A large-tire wheelchair capable of handling rough terrain
A smart wheelchair customizable for urban or suburban travel
Efficient e-bikes tailored for everyday commuting and adventure riding
These products reflect Yamaha’s mission to enrich mobility for all, not just motorcyclists.
CEO Shitara Reaffirms Brand Philosophy
During the event, Yamaha Motor CEO Motofumi Shitara reaffirmed the company’s core mission:
“Yamaha Motor is a company that creates satisfaction and excitement. We will continue stimulating people’s desire to enjoy life.”
He emphasized that Yamaha’s evolution will not slow down. The brand remains committed to merging craftsmanship, advanced engineering, and the changing demands of modern society.
A Future Defined by Innovation
The Japan Mobility Show demonstrated that Yamaha’s vision for the future is not only bold but technologically ambitious. From AI-driven motorcycles to hydrogen engines and advanced EVs, Yamaha is pushing the boundaries of what modern mobility can be.
As the industry undergoes rapid change, Yamaha’s innovations promise a future where machines are not just tools—but intelligent partners that elevate the riding experience.
