Sheikh Khaled Meets Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan in Abu Dhabi

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, met with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Abu Dhabi to discuss deeper cooperation between the UAE and the Indian state of Kerala. The meeting highlighted the long-standing ties between the two regions and underlined the shared commitment to expand collaboration across multiple sectors.

A Meeting Focused on Prosperity and Partnership

The discussion centred on strengthening bilateral relations, especially in areas that support economic growth and social development. Sheikh Khaled and Chief Minister Vijayan explored ways to enhance collaboration in trade, investment, technology, and education — sectors that play a major role in shaping the future of both economies.

The talks also aligned closely with the vision of the UAE leadership, which prioritises sustainable development, innovation, and building global partnerships. With Kerala being one of India’s fastest-growing states and home to a large expatriate population in the UAE, enhancing cooperation offers wide-ranging benefits.

Key Areas of Discussion

During the meeting, both sides expressed a strong desire to open new avenues of cooperation that could create long-term value for communities in both regions. Some of the major areas discussed included:

1. Trade and Investment

Kerala has traditionally enjoyed a deep economic connection with the UAE, driven by trade, tourism, and the contributions of the Malayalee expatriate community. Sheikh Khaled and CM Vijayan discussed ways to increase two-way investment, expand trade partnerships, and identify new sectors where businesses from both sides can collaborate.

2. Technology and Innovation

The UAE’s growing innovation ecosystem — including smart city projects, digital transformation, and advanced industries — offers opportunities for knowledge exchange with Kerala. Discussions covered the potential for joint initiatives in emerging technologies, research collaborations, and innovation-driven development.

3. Education and Skill Development

Education is another priority area. Kerala’s high literacy rate and strong educational institutions make it an ideal partner for UAE-based academic collaborations. The two leaders explored opportunities for student exchange programmes, research partnerships, and skill development initiatives that could support the workforce needs of both regions.

4. Sustainable Development

Both the UAE and Kerala place strong emphasis on sustainable economic growth. Discussions highlighted potential cooperation in renewable energy, environmental sustainability, urban planning, and climate-resilient infrastructure — areas that can contribute to shared long-term prosperity.

Senior Officials Attend the Meeting

Several high-level UAE officials were present during the meeting, emphasising the importance of the partnership:

Ahmed Jasem Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development

Saif Saeed Ghobash, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council

Maryam Eid Al Mheiri, Chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Media Office

Their presence indicates the UAE’s commitment to deepening ties not just politically, but also at administrative and institutional levels.

Warm Welcome for Kerala’s Chief Minister

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan arrived in Abu Dhabi on November 8 and received a warm reception from the Malayalee community in the UAE. Kerala has one of the largest expatriate populations in the Emirates, and the state’s cultural and economic links with the UAE remain strong.

Among those who welcomed the Chief Minister was prominent business leader MA Yusuff Ali, Chairman of Lulu Group International. As a key figure in the UAE’s retail and business landscape, Yusuff Ali has long played a vital role in strengthening UAE–India economic relations.

A Relationship Rooted in People and Progress

The UAE and Kerala share a partnership built not just on government-level cooperation, but also on decades of people-to-people connections. Millions of Malayalees have lived and worked in the UAE, contributing to the nation’s development and strengthening cultural ties between the two regions.

The meeting between Sheikh Khaled and Chief Minister Vijayan reinforces the commitment to further enhance this relationship. With ongoing collaboration in trade, technology, and education, the partnership is set to grow even stronger in the years ahead.

As both sides continue to explore new opportunities, this meeting marks another important chapter in the UAE–Kerala relationship — one focused on innovation, growth and shared progress.
