Dubai RTA to roll out V2X smart traffic system

Dubai’s RTA to launch smart traffic system connecting vehicles to signals

Dubai: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a next-generation smart traffic system, called V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything), which will connect traffic signals directly with vehicles as part of the emirate’s Smart Connected Vehicles initiative. The rollout, planned for 2027–2028, will cover around 620 intersections, allowing drivers to receive real-time traffic updates directly on their dashboards.

This transformative system aims to improve traffic management, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety. By using artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin technologies, the RTA will simulate traffic scenarios, analyse intersections, and optimise signal operations before implementing decisions in the real world.

Integration with vehicles

Coordination is underway with car manufacturers to equip new vehicles with built-in connectivity features. For older cars, owners can access the system through add-on devices or CarPlay and Android Auto applications, ensuring that live traffic data is displayed on the vehicle’s screen. This reduces driver distraction from mobile phones while keeping essential traffic information readily available.

The V2X system will communicate crucial data, including:

Remaining green-light duration and red-light countdowns

Signal status at upcoming intersections

Optimal crossing speeds

Congestion alerts, detours, and closures

Accident notifications

Future phases will incorporate vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, enabling cars to warn each other about slowdowns or obstacles ahead.

AI-powered traffic management

The system will be integrated into the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre (DITSC), where AI-powered cameras and computer vision analytics will monitor vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in real time. This allows instant operational adjustments to optimise traffic flow, enhance safety, and reduce travel delays.

Engineer Salahuddin Al Marzooqi, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA, explained:

“The main goal is to reduce driver distraction from mobile phones by integrating all essential traffic information into the vehicle dashboard, thereby improving safety and preventing accidents.”

The V2X network will serve as the core of Dubai’s next-generation traffic signal operations, supporting multi-modal mobility and data exchange between vehicles and connected infrastructure through ITS-C interactive technology.

Implementation timeline

2025–2026: Coordination with car manufacturers and testing of integration devices

2027–2028: Full rollout across 620 signalised intersections in Dubai

Pilot phase: Testing with selected vehicles before citywide deployment

Once operational, the V2X system will position Dubai as a global leader in intelligent traffic management, providing a safer, smoother, and more connected driving experience.
