Iran, World Cup tensions loom over FIFA Congress ahead of 2026 tournament
The annual Congress of FIFA is taking place in Vancouver, Canada, bringing together over 1,600 delegates from more than 200 member associations. However, this yearās meeting is far from routine, as major geopolitical and organizational issues loom large ahead of the expanded FIFA World Cup 2026.
One of the biggest concerns is the situation involving Iran. Iranian football officials failed to attend the Congress after reportedly being denied entry into Canada, creating diplomatic tension just weeks before the World Cup.
The incident has intensified scrutiny over Iranās participation in the tournament, which is set to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, FIFA leadership has maintained that Iran will participate according to the official draw.
Beyond Iran, several other issues are under discussion:
- The logistical challenges of hosting the largest-ever 48-team World Cup
- Rising costs and travel concerns across three host nations
- Ongoing debates over Russiaās international football ban
- Political controversies affecting global football governance
Adding to the tension, recent criticism from players and stakeholders has highlighted concerns about politics influencing football decisions, including awards and governance choices ahead of the tournament.
