Iran-US Relations 2026: Iran Urges US to Drop 'Excessive Demands' Amid Stalled Peace Talks
TEHRAN (May 4, 2026): Iran has officially called on the United States to reduce its "maximalist" and "excessive" demands as negotiations to end the two-month-long Middle East conflict remain at a deadlock. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei emphasized that Tehran's priority is ending the war, but progress is impossible without a "reasonable approach" from Washington.
The tension escalated after President Donald Trump announced that the US military would begin escorting stranded ships through the Strait of Hormuzāa vital oil waterway currently under an Iranian blockade. In response, Iran's military has warned that any "aggressive foreign force" entering the strait will be attacked. While Trump mentioned that "positive discussions" are happening via Pakistani mediators, Iran continues to study the US response to its 14-point peace proposal, which includes demands for US troop withdrawal and compensation for recent strikes.
